He began his relationship with medicine at the University of the Basque Country’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, where he obtained his degree in Medicine and Surgery in 1998. As someone deeply involved in the practice of sport, he understands first-hand the significance of sports injuries and the suffering they entail. This led him to specialize in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, as this exciting field is so closely related to sport. He became specialized at Santiago Hospital, Vitoria-Gasteiz, from 2001 to 2006.
In 2004, he began an outstanding professional career under Dr. Mikel Sánchez at the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit (UCA). At this unit, he received specialized training in arthroscopic surgery, minimally invasive treatments, as well as the application of biological therapies. In 2006, he received a grant from the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit to perform experimental surgery on-site and became an active member of the research team.
In 2005, he made a stay at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester-Minnesota (USA), in the Department of Orthopedics for Lower Limb-Adult Reconstruction. Since January 2008, he has been part of the medical team at the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit (UCA) and the Advanced Biological Therapy Unit (UTBA) where he works tirelessly on experimental and clinical studies with the rest of the team.
His main area of interest is that of lower extremity pathologies, with special emphasis on the hip. For this reason, he and Dr. Nicolás Fiz created the Hip Unit within Dr. Mikel Sánchez’s Arthroscopic Surgery Unit in 2009.
Furthermore, he has been invited to speak at various national and international congresses on arthroscopic and prosthetic pathologies and biological therapies. In recent years, he has represented the Arthroscopic Surgery Unit and Advanced Biological Therapy Unit at international events held in Innsbruck (ESSKA, 2008), Taiwan (national orthopedic conference), Qatar (2010) and Rio de Janeiro (ISAKOS 2011).
He is currently a member of the Basque-Navarre Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (SVNCOT), serving as its treasurer since 2010. He is also a full member of the Spanish Society of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology (SECOT), member of the International Association of Osteosynthesis, AO Trauma, and member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS).
